“When it comes to software, I keep it just as simple. First, Apple computer products are my go-to. My software includes Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, and even Illustrator at times. I try to stay away from too many actions. As a craftsman, I want to create my own recipes in Photoshop. The one software that I will suggest in post is OnOne. The ability to build or layer using their tools has come in handy for high-volume production projects. The only other tool I utilize in the design phase is Fundy AlbumBuilder.”

Building on the Light

“In general, my intent with light is to create a scene, portrait, or image that does not look intentionally lit. Some of this comes from the influence of cinema and painting.”

When Paul is shooting, the first thing he looks at is the available lighting. “I ask myself, ‘How can I build on that? What can I do to enhance the natural lighting situation?’” he says. “Sometimes, a primary light source doesn’t present itself. At that point, I try to start from scratch by overpowering the ambient light or eliminating it. Directional light is primarily my approach. I use whatever I can to achieve the light I need.”
